It’s probably going to go no where as the prosecutor will be out of a job soon, but still, I got a bit of thrill when the hubby showed me the story on the Chron’s site last night a few hours after it broke:
A South Texas grand jury has indicted Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on state charges related to the alleged abuse of prisoners in Willacy County’s federal detention centers.
…
Cheney’s indictment on a charge of engaging in an organized criminal activity criticizes the vice president’s investment in the Vanguard Group, which holds interests in the private prison companies running the federal detention centers. It accuses Cheney of a conflict of interest and “at least misdemeanor assaults” on detainees because of his link to the prison companies.
…
The indictment accuses Gonzales of using his position while in office to stop an investigation in 2006 into abuses at one of the privately-run prisons.
I fully expect the charges against Cheney to be dropped. They just seem to be malicious add-ons of a pissed off lawyer making his final stand. As for Gonzales interfering with an investigation, maybe that could go somewhere. I dunno.

Nicole Griffin of Roswell, Georgia would easily take the bronze and I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if she got the gold. In fact, her behaviour might even spark the creation of a platinum medal.
Nicole Griffin’s claim to medal deserving maliciousness?
When she failed to successfully purchase the house of one of her mother’s neighbours, she decided to make his life a living hell.
According to the write up at Yahoo, Griffin contacted the FBI, the local PD, local media, the Georgia AG, the Georgia governor and her congressman Tom Price. Price contacted INS. Griffin also went after the real estate agent who was not a party to the original sale of the house to Jimenez and tried to have her license revoked.
And after finally being kicked out for not paying the rent she’d agreed to pay Jimenez until the deal was closed, she went to his place of employment and got him fired. Still unsatisfied, she decided to put signs up in the Jimenez’s yard in order to provoke outrage against him and his family by his neighbours.
Jimenez has since been arrested by ICE and may be deported early next year.
It’d be one thing if Griffin merely reported that Jimenez was here illegally due to the popular notion that harassing brown people with non-English names is somehow “patriotic”, but the only reason she did so was in order to get those people to “help the sale go through”.
In other words, she tried to bully Jimenez and used his status as an undocumented worker against him. All those people she contacted? Most could arrest Jimenez and the ones who couldn’t arrest him personally could see to it that others arrested him.
Griffin maintains that she hasn’t done anything wrong and that she does not regret the trouble she has caused Jimenez and his family.
If that doesn’t qualify as plain mean, I don’t know what does.

Alright folks, break out your violins. James Dobson just fired 202 of his bigoted employees. This is just weeks after the passage of Prop 8, which Focus on the Bigotry put $600K into.
Focus on the Family announced this afternoon that 202 jobs will be cut companywide — an estimated 20 percent of its workforce. Initial reports bring the total number of remaining employees to around 950.
Focus on the Family is poised to announce major layoffs to its Colorado Springs-based ministry and media empire today. The cutbacks come just weeks after the group pumped more than half a million dollars into the successful effort to pass a gay-marriage ban in California.
Couldn’t happen to a more deserving group, eh?

On the heels of Catholic bishops vowing to continue their war on the rights of women comes yet more news of Catholic leaders being assholes. This time it’s a priest in South Carolina who’s decided to tell Obama supporters not to take communion.
His reason? Because supporting Barack *Hussein* Obama over that other guy who was running “constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil.”
A South Carolina Roman Catholic priest has told his parishioners that they should refrain from receiving Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion, and supporting him “constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil.”
The Rev. Jay Scott Newman said in a letter distributed Sunday to parishioners at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greenville that they are putting their souls at risk if they take Holy Communion before doing penance for their vote.
“Our nation has chosen for its chief executive the most radical pro-abortion politician ever to serve in the United States Senate or to run for president,” Newman wrote, referring to Obama by his full name, including his middle name of Hussein.
And what has the “most radical pro-abortion politician ever to serve” done to deserve his title?
show
Well, despite some poorly chosen words and perhaps an erroneous belief or two, Obama has supported and continues to support reproductive freedom as do many of his Democratic colleagues and the majority of Americans.
What sets Obama apart, perhaps, is that he has said that passing the Freedom of Choice Act will happen under is administration.
They hate him for it and that’s why they call him such an extremist. He supports women’s rights. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Horrible little man, eh?

Have you ever wondered exactly how many people at work are Apocalyptic Christians who believe Revelations is a factual account of how the world as we know it is going to end and not a delusional take on the politics of the times?
Well, a company out in California may be able to help you find out this information in just two steps.
Step 1: Install a Handscanner
Step 2: I lied. There is no step 2.
However, successful completion of step 1 may result in complaints by Apocalyptic Christians thus requiring that this form letter be sent to all employees.
An excerpt:
We at Recognition Systems wish to first make it clear that our hand scanners
DO NOT IN ANY WAY HAVE THE ABILITY TO DETECT THE “MARK OF THE BEAST” OR ANY OTHER MARK ON A PERSON S HAND.
DO NOT IN ANY WAY HAVE THE ABILITY TO PLACE THE “MARK OF THE BEAST” OR ANY OTHER MARK ON A PERSON S HAND.
We at Recognition Systems understand that these fads alone may not completely allay the fears of these concerned individuals and would like to offer a solution…
You must head over to Alas, A Blog (link above) for the solution. I think you’ll at least crack a smile.
